Title:  NKP 2-8-2 #597 - Nickel Plate Road
Description:  Originally built as Lake Erie & Western #5551 by Baldwin in September of 1918, it slid onto the Nickel Plate roster in 1923 as NKP #597. The 2-8-2 Mikado served the NKP well until its sale to NdeM in January of 1946. It was renumbered NdeM #2213 and served the Mexican railroad well. Unknown photographer.

Description:  Fine example of a Lima built 2-8-2 Mikado for the New York, Chicago & St Louis Railroad (Nickel Plate) in March of 1917 (serial #5430, class H-5a). The loco served in both passenger and freight service until being sold for scrap in September of 1956 to Luntz Iron & Steel Company. Specs - 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 24x32" cylinders, engine weight of 291,750 lb, tractive effort of 49,737 lb. The photo is from the Howard W. Ameling collection.

Title:  NKP 2-8-2 #612 - Nickel Plate Road
Description:  Here is a 2-8-2 Mikado built by Lima in December of 1920 for NKP as #612. In May of 1922 it had a trailer booster added which bumped up the tractive force to 64,100 lb from 54,700 lb but removed later in 1950. In October of 1926, a BL feedwater heater and air pumps were added to the pilot deck. It was "laid up" (retired) in January of 1954 and eventually sold in August of 1954 for scrap to Luntz Iron & Steel. This is a Prescott photo.

It was in the class U-3c and according to the info on the back of the photo, it had 51" drivers, developed a boiler pressure of 175 psi for its 25"x28" cylinders, and generated a respectable tractive force of 50,000 lb. Description:  On 9/11/36 in Chicago Illinois there was a collision between the 709 shoving a caboose and a cut of 15 standing cars. It resulted in three casualties. Stored at Conneaut 8/57. Sold to Luria Bros 4/18/1961. Dismantled by Lederer Iron & Steel in Cleveland 11/61. After doing some research, it looks like almost every one of these is a Berk. Not just based on how they look but a list of what was stored there and when they were scrapped.

Description:  The Nickel Plate Road was late to dieselize. Still running 2-8-4 Berkshire steam locomotives until mid-1957, they were one of the last major railroads to run steam. The year is 1963, however, and steam is gone. Here, class leader GP30, NKP #900, sits in Conneaut, Ohio coupled to ALCO RS-3 NKP #544 on Wednesday May 29, 1963. NKP 900 still lives today and is on display at the Mad River and NKP Museum in Bellevue, Ohio. Photo by James Pope.

Description:  N&W 3540 is on the head of NKP 759 for its first run after rebuilding. Thankfully the N&W took 3540 off and the 759 ran without its diesel helper.
