KCS F9Am 91 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern F-unit 91 was receiving some attention in the engine house at West Yard, just outside of New Orleans. The locomotive was built as L&A F7A 74D in February 1951; but after being wrecked at Sulphur Springs, Texas on 12 October 1955, EMD rebuilt it into an F9Am in March 1956. It was assigned unit number 91 in Januery 1957 (while retaining engine number 74D), renumbered 4061 in April 1978, sold to Mountain Diesel Transportation in 1988, and -- after changing ownership several times -- is still in existence in 2010. |

Kansas City Southern SD40-2 680 and 683 were at WEST YARD, just west of New Orleans. These were two of 14 KCS long-nose "snoot" units (677-690) which were originally equipped for radio-control helper operation, and these were very unusual in New Orleans until radio-control helpers were replaced by manned helpers. Not all of the r/c units were snoots, but they could all be identified by their three Motorola antennas, instead if just one. |

KCS 4061 |
Description: |
KCS F9Am's 4061 and 4053 sit outs the west side of the West Yard diesel shop, along with SW7 4302. The two F-units were rebuilt by EMD in March 1956 after a head-on collision at Sulphur Springs, Texas; which certainly contributed to their longevity. In late 1982 and early 1983 the KCS kept a pair of F-units at New Orleans as emergency power. |

KCS F9Am 4053 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern F9Am 4053 was outside the diesel shop at West Yard, just west of New Orleans. The unit had been built as F7A 58D and was rebuilt by EMD in March 1956 after a head-on collision at Sulphur Springs, Texas. This rebuild explained the F9 louver arrangement and contributed to its longevity. It was scrapped in March 1986. |

A pair of MP15AC's, lead a flatcar with some APC's two hoppers and a SP caboose headed east over the Huey P. Long Bridge. This is way before the Elmwood Medical Center was built and I was standing in a vacant field that will become a large stripmall shopping area today. |

KCS GP40 784 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern GP40 784 was on train No. 53 as it was heading east across the New Orleans area over the Norfolk Southern, on its way from the KCS to the Seaboard System’s GENTILLY YARD. Notice the extra 800-gallon fuel tank which the KCS had added between the front truck and the original 2600-gallon tank. The 784 had been built in February 1967 as Illinois Central 3048 (EMD 32868) and was acquired by the KCS in April 1982, after its initial 15-year lease expired. In 1991 the KCS sent it to Morrison- Knudsen as partial payment for upgrading 16 GP40’s into GP40M-2’s 4780-4795. M-K sold it to Helm in March 1996 and it went AMF in Montreal, where it was remanufactured into GP38M-3 number 61 for the Roberval & Saguenay Railway in December 1996. |
